I had an interesting conversation with Michael Underwood from Bass Pro Shops in Garland, TX. He went to the boat ramp at Minnow Bucket and also the public ramp on Hwy 154 at night to bass fish from the shore. He had just caught 7 fish up to 7 lbs. walking the shore. His opinion is that the bass lie in the grass at night and use the lights near the water to back light the perch that are moving in to spawn. The bass lie in the grass and feed on the perch that are swimming above the grass, feeding on bugs along the shoreline and the rocks. He used a Lucky Craft Wake Bait with the bill filed down so that it just wakes along the surface.
I had a similar experience years back on a moonlit night after a torrential rain. We pulled in to a cove in Williams Creek with numerous RVs and lights and then caught 3 bass to 9 lbs. on black spinnerbaits. The water was stained and the fish were using the lights from the RV park to back light the baitfish swimming above them.
For a brain the size of a pea, bass are pretty smart fish.
